How My Recent Trip to Mexico Reminded Me About Wellness + Humanity

I just got back from an incredibly rejuvenating trip to Mexico.  My husband wanted us to take a family vacation to slowwwwww down and reset after a very busy 2018 and plans to have an on fire 2019.

Of course, I obliged :)

We’ve actually never taken a trip like this where the task was to do NOTHING. I was feeling super anxious and antsy.  Would l know how, I thought?  I wasn’t sure I could sit for 3 days.

Well, I’m here to tell you that I made it and there are a few helpful wellness nuggets I took away from being in the beautiful country of Mexico in the states of Nayarit and Jalisco/Puerto Vallarta.

Here they are:

1)    Greetings- I love how people take the time to look you in the eye, greet you and say, “buenos dias” before asking something.  It’s like a moment of checking in that acknowledges humanity.  I found the same in Paris where you wouldn’t dare start rambling off with needs, request and wants without offering a proper greeting.

Take away: Allow yourself to be seen and also “see” others.

2)    Enjoy your food- When we were out and about there was pride in the food. The freshness and flavors = love.  I think we get so caught up in the rat race that we often skip out on slowly dining with tasty, high quality food, made with heart felt intentions.

Take away: Savor the moment.

3)    Community- I think a lot of us are lonely and I know I’ve certainly felt that way through the years.  You can be surrounded by people but still feel isolated if you don’t get out and intermix.

I love that you really can strike up a conversation with anyone (even if you’re not the best at speaking the language) and folks will engage.  I fee like I’m able to tap into the pulse of the city when chatting it up with people out and about.

Here in LA, I know I’ve been guilty of being so busy flying around that I don’t take as much time as I should to connect.  I really do like to talk to the checkers at the grocery store, the folks that work in produce, and people in line when waiting for food.  I’ve realized that lately, I’m on my phone when waiting instead of engaging with humans around me.

Take away: Connect with real life humans :)

Wellness is not just about feeling good and diet but also about our connection to the microcosm that we live in.  Stay well!

Blessings,
