YOu never know how people are really feeling or the status of their  health. in this pic from a several years ago, i was running myself ragged and was not  practicing what i preach  holistically.  I had to listen to my body and make some adjustments in my life.

I often wonder when our society became complacent living life with lack of balance.  In American culture, there’s such a disconnect between how we live and our overall health.  It seems that people are surprised when the body breaks down after days (or months) of little sleep, stress and improper nutrition. We live life on hustle mode filled with continual compromises to make deadlines and prepare for projects.  We throw up our hands and say, “well, it's the culture”.  This establishes an unhealthy new norm of folks on serious struggle mode.  Not to say that challenges aren’t inevitable but it’s important to try to find harmony and balance when possible.

When I’m out and about in the world, I have this annoying knack for picking up on signs of depletion that I see in folks (occupational side effect).  To the rest of the world, a person may seem incredibly exuberant, successful, accomplished, strong.  Behind that I can see signs of low vitality such as bags under the eyes, increased perspiration, thinning hair,  deep cough, heavy breathing, squinting from a headache, rubbing a sore back, limping, excessive energy and more.

What I’ve come to learn is that we all really just need more compassion for one another.  When someone says they’re fine even if they seem like they have it all, their wellness may be hanging on by a thread.

It can be hard to know if you’re taking a whole person approach to wellness because often when in the throws of life we can be so “in it” that we don’t know what’s really throwing us off.

Here are 6 questions you can ask yourself to assess your holistic wellness. Reflect on how these aspects of life may be impacting your health and what you can do to take action and realign with wellness:

  1. Is it hard for you to get settled at night because your mind is running through all the things you need to do?
  2. Are you in harmony with your living environment or where you spend most of your time?
  3. Do you feel that you are operating at your best and highest level?
  4. Does the core of who you are feel solid?
  5. Are you expressing yourself in a way that’s in alignment with who you really are?
  6. Have you embraced the need to surrender because circumstances are beyond your control?

If you’re feeling challenged in any of these areas consider that your lifestyle may be impacting your wellness and you need to take a whole person approach.  There’s no amount of kale that will re-align you if you need to slow down, talk to a therapist, make follow up appointments with your health care practitioner, find peace of mind, make some transitions or meditate.

Health and wellness is a complex and robust, all encompassing facet of life.  I like to work with the chakras or power centers to help get on track and make those holistic, mind-body-spirit connections.
